Dhurandhar is the story of a mysterious man who creates chaos in Pakistan. Ajay Sanyal (R. Madhavan), the head of the Intelligence Bureau, is deeply disturbed by two major incidents — the 1999 Air India hijacking and the deadly attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13, 2001.

In 2002, Foreign Minister Debabrata Kapoor (Akash Khurana) approves Ajay’s proposed mission named “Operation Dhurandhar.” Following this plan, two years later, an Indian undercover agent (Ranveer Singh) enters Pakistan under the disguise of Hamza Ali Mazari. He starts working at a juice shop in Lyari, a politically unstable region in Karachi.

From the shop owner Alam (Gaurav Gera), Hamza learns about two rival groups operating in Lyari — one led by Babu Dacoit and the other by Rehman Balochi, also known as Rehman Dacoit (Akshaye Khanna). As his name suggests, Rehman is from Balochistan, and Hamza also pretends to be from the same area.

Hamza gains Rehman’s trust after rescuing Rehman’s elder son during an attack by Babu Dacoit’s men. This incident helps him become part of Rehman’s inner circle.

Rehman is close to a local politician, Jameel Jamali  who feels insecure about maintaining his control in Lyari. Because of this fear, Jameel decides to bring back dismissed police officer Chaudhary Aslam (Sanjay Dutt) into the force, with the sole purpose of keeping Rehman in check.

Meanwhile, Rehman builds a friendly relationship with Major Iqbal (Arjun Rampal) from the ISI and eagerly supports the ISI’s operations against India. Since Hamza is now one of Rehman’s key members, he gets direct access to the ISI’s strategies planned against India.

While Hamza is committed to serving his country, he unexpectedly falls in love with Jameel’s daughter, Yalina (Sara Arjun). What follows after this forms the rest of the film’s story.

Dhurandhar box office update

On Sunday, Dhurandhar earned ₹43 crore in India, marking the film’s biggest single-day collection so far. The movie also performed exceptionally well overseas, bringing in an estimated $1.2 million on Sunday.

By Sunday night, Dhurandhar’s domestic box office total reached an impressive ₹103 crore (₹123.50 crore gross). The film managed to cross the ₹100 crore mark within its first weekend itself, driven largely by strong word-of-mouth and remarkable growth.

Overseas, Dhurandhar has now collected $3.2 million, showing impressive jumps in earnings on both Saturday and Sunday. In just three days, the film’s worldwide collection has now reached ₹152 crore.

Dhurandhar beats major actioners

The scale of Dhurandhar’s success can be understood from the fact that within just three days, it has surpassed the earnings of several major action films. Its ₹152 crore collection is now higher than Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 3 (₹137 crore), Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha (₹135 crore), and Sunny Deol’s Ghayal (₹110 crore).

Based on the current trend, Dhurandhar is expected to easily cross ₹250 crore during the rest of the week. How well it holds in its second week will determine the final outcome, but it already appears to be heading toward becoming a major hit.

According to Sacnilk, Dhurandhar opened far better than expected, earning ₹28 crore on its first day in India. On Saturday, the film saw a growth of 14.29% and collected ₹32 crore, bringing its total to ₹59 crore. This momentum continued on the third day as well, with the film earning ₹43 crore on Sunday.

With this, the movie has crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the domestic box office, and its total collection now stands at ₹103 crore. Clearly, strong word-of-mouth is working heavily in its favor.

The film has also become one of Ranveer’s biggest opening weekends, surpassing the first weekend collections of his previous movies like Padmaavat (₹78 crore), Simmba (₹75.11 crore), and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani (₹46.81 crore).

What story is Dhurandhar based on?

Although the Bollywood movie Dhurandhar claims to be “inspired by an unbelievable true story,” the filmmaker has disputed that it is based on the life of any one person, and the precise source has not been officially verified. However, many have conjectured that the movie is based on Major Mohit Sharma’s life due to similarities in the plot, particularly with regard to a spy infiltrating a difficult area. The late soldier’s family has backed this assertion, but the director of the movie has rejected it, sparking a court battle.

Another theory is that the movie was inspired by actual incidents involving the police crackdown on gangs in Karachi, Pakistan’s Lyari neighborhood.
